Classifications

Governments are classified in many ways. One classification is that which distinguishes monarchic from republican governments. Modern scholars have tended to stress the characteristics that distinguish democratic governments from dictatorships. In classifying democratic nations, parliamentary governments are often distinguished from presidential ones. Another classification makes a distinction among unitary, federal, and confederated governments.
